The Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders have their own character and residents are justly proud of their heritage. As you would expect it is full of reminders of the wars and skirmishes between England and Scotland, with numerous ruined castles and abbeys. Dryburgh Abbey for example was destroyed three times by fire, but today its well-preserved ruins are home to the graves of Sir Walter Scott and Douglas Haig. Sir Walter Scott's home at Abbotsford is also well worth seeing and Melrose Abbey nearby is one of the most beautiful such ruins in Britain. Jedburgh is an attractive town and its history is a microcosm of the whole area.
