Cumbria

England’s second largest county, Cumbria is most famous for containing within it the Lake District National Park, with some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain, including England’s highest mountains and spectacular lakes. Apart from this sections of Hadrian’s Wall run through the county, and many walks along it are easy to arrange. Also try and visit one of the Pele Towers; unique defensive structures that bear testimony to the uncertainty of life on The Border. The Settle-Carlisle Railway was the last major main-line railway to be built, and, despite frequent threats of closure, still runs today; surely the most picturesque line of all.
