Dumfries and Galloway

The cult film classic "The Wicker Man" was filmed here and Britt Ekland described it as "The bleakest place on earth". That is unfair; with miles of coastline, hills, moorland and the Galloway Forest Park, the area has beautiful unspoilt scenery to suit all tastes. It has many other attractions too, and like The Scottish Borders, plenty of evidence of centuries of warfare. Avis it to the world famous village of Gretna Green is a must; you will be joining the five thousand plus, couples who journey there every year to get married. Historic buildings include the romantically named Sweetheart Abbey, and the castle at Caerlaverock.
