County Durham

For most people any mention of County Durham immediately conjures up an image of the spectacular castle and cathedral, towering above the town, and now a World Heritage site. As well as its historical landmarks, also including the third oldest university in the country, Durham also boasts a lively nightlife and full range of shops. There is a variety of countryside, from the Heritage coastline in the east, to the rugged splendour of the Pennines in the West. In Shildon the county shows off its links with its railway past, with an impressive outpost of the National Railway Museum.
