With forest, woodland, river valleys and downland Hampshire has countryside for everyone. The ancient New Forest, a royal hunting forest for nearly a thousand years, is now full of attractions, with adventure parks, museums and galleries. Visit the City of Winchester, once England’s capital, with its ancient cathedral. Or spend time in Portsmouth, one of England’s great maritime centres. Southampton is a modern city with good shops and lively night life. There are numerous great houses in the county, such as the exciting ruins of Basing, or the magnificent Uppark, recently restored after a catastrophic fire. Beaulieu Abbey houses the world famous Motor Museum.
