Northumberland
Although it has busy towns, the word that might characterise Northumberland is "peace", it is after all the least densely populated of all England's counties. Northumberland is a place to visit for anyone who enjoys spectacular open rugged countryside and the history of our nation. You can begin with Hadrian's Wall, reminding you that this is border country, before moving to Berwick, with its wonderfully preserved walls. Extraordinary castles exist at Alnwick, the historic home of the Percy family, and Bamburgh, with its spectacular location looking out over what was recently voted the best beach in the country.
