The Orkney IslesSituated off the Northern tip of Scotland the Orkneys comprise an archipelago of some seventy islands of which approximately 17 are inhabited. The islands are a place of beautiful coastal scenery and a wide variety of wildlife, such as common and grey seals, dolphins and porpoises and whales. The islands are also an important centre for bird watching. The Orkneys have an important Neolithic past, with the magnificent standing stones at the Ring of Brodgar, and the well preserved village of Skara Brae. The Vikings too, left their mark with monuments including the cathedral of ST. Mark situated in the main town of Kirkwall. |
