Rutland

Although the smallest of England's counties (it is only eighteen miles north to south) Rutland still has places of interest. Its county town is Oakham, with a fine hall, remnant of a fortified manor and a well -known public school, founded in the reign of Elizabeth I. Uppingham is the other town of any significance. The county's major leisure attraction is Rutland Water, the largest man-made lake in Europe, where you can wind surf, rock climb or simply study the wildlife. Alternatively you can visit Normanton church, which would have been entirely submerged had it not been raised on a special pier.
