South Yorkshire

An industrial area set in attractive country but dominated by the city of Sheffield and the towns of Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley. The county has a proud industrial heritage based on mining and steel, Sheffield is of course the home of cutlery. There are many museums and other attractions that demonstrate this history, such as the recreated eighteenth century industrial hamlet at Abbeydale. There are impressive castle remains at Conisborough, where recent restoration works have greatly added to the interest. Sheffield is an excellent shopping centre and has a buzzing nightlife with a range of pubs and clubs.
